The root is unseen, and our life is hid with Christ; the root bears the tree, diffuses sap to it, and in Christ are all supports and supplies. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples. 15 I shall no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know the master's business; I call you friends, because I have made known to you everything I have learnt from my Father. (AO) 27 And you also must testify,(AP) for you have been with me from the beginning.(AQ). The word philos is used here. The Father is the Husbandman. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. They have seen and hated: probably means that they have seen his works and still have hated; but the Greek can be read: “have seen both me and my Father and still have hated both me and my Father.” Works,that no one else ever did: so Yahweh in Dt 4:32–33. 23Whoever hates me also hates my Father.s

Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. * [15:22, 24] Jesus’ words (spoken) and deeds (works) are the great motives of credibility. 10 If you keep my commands,(N) you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. This verse has been particularly influential in debates concerning the nature of the Trinity and in the filioque disputes between Eastern and Western Christianity.

If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. This text, which primarily refers to Jesus’ impending death, has since been widely used to affirm the sacrifice of martyrs and soldiers in war, and is thus often seen on war memorials and graves.
